HeartLands Senior Living Village Helps in Haiti Relief Efforts
Raising Funds
HeartLands Senior Living Village at Ellicott City has raised more than $5,000 for Haiti Relief efforts. Donations have come from residents and staff and the Resident Council. The residents' crafts class made bead pins to resemble Haiti's flag, which were given out when donations were given.
Employees Affected
Heartlands at Ellicott City has six Haitian employees who were directly affected by the earthquake in Haiti. All have family members (wives, mothers, brothers, sisters and cousins) who reside in Haiti, many in Port au Prince. Three of these employees are related, and their family members lived in a house in the capital. When the house started to shake they immediately ran outside. The house was demolished. They lost all possessions and are now residing in a church.
Two other employees have not been so lucky. Both ladies have lost many family members and do not know what has happened to others. For the first 24-48 hours after the earthquake, these astonishing employees worked through their fears and tears. They came to work on time and continued taking care of our seniors without a complaint.
The staff at Heartland has raised more than $5,000 for the families of these employees. "They represent people of need who show us how to deal with life in its worst case," said Executive Director of Heartlands Sharon Kruskamp. "Heartlands is blessed to have these employees as we learn from them daily." These employees are truly appreciated and our thoughts are with them.
Corporate Support
Five Star Senior Living is helping show its support for those impacted by this disaster by matching employee donations to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund up to a total of $10,000.
"For those that can and will help out with this effort I want to thank you. For those of you that were impacted by this horrific tragedy, I want to express my deepest condolences," said Bruce Mackey, CEO of Five Star Senior Living.
